Verdox, a US-based electric carbon capture spinout of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, launched today with $80m in funding supplied by Breakthrough Energy Ventures Prelude Ventures and Lowercarbon Capital. Founded in 2019, Verdox has created technology to remove carbon dioxide from industrial emissions and the air with 70% energy savings compared to conventional approaches. Kyoto Fusioneering, a Japan-based carbon-neutral technology developer spun out of Kyoto University, has raised $11.7m in series B funding featuring Kyoto University Innovation Capital. JGC Mirai Innovation Fund, Daiwa Corporate Investment and DBJ Capital, respective vehicles for engineering group JGC Holdings Corporation, brokerage Daiwa Securities, and Development Bank of Japan also took part, as did Coral Capital and JIC Venture Growth Investments. The spinout additionally secured $7m in debt financing supplied by Bank of Kyoto, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank. The company’s total equity funding now stands at ¥1.67bn ($14.6m at current exchange rates). Boost Technologies, the Japan-based provider of carbon dioxide emission visualisation platform Energy x Green, has received ¥1.2bn ($10.5m) in a series A round backed by University of Tokyo Edge Capital, the venture capital arm of University of Tokyo. The round was led by Globis Capital Partners, a vehicle for education services provider Globis, and also included mobile network operator NTT Docomo subsidiary NTT Docomo Ventures. Zetta Genomics, a UK-based genomic data management technology developer spun out of University of Cambridge, has picked up £2.5m ($3.4m) in seed funding from a consortium that included tech transfer office Cambridge Enterprise. The round also attracted Nina Capital and Apex Ventures. Crewt Medical Systems, a Japan-based eyesight evaluation equipment developer, has received ¥320m ($2.8m) from University of Tokyo’s Innovation Platform – which invested $1.8m – and consulting and investment group Future Partner’s as well as leasing services firm Fuyo General Lease. Strominnate Therapeutics, a Sweden-based spinout of Lund University working on a treatment for brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme, has received an undisclosed sum from the institution’s technology transfer arm LU Holding. – Additional reporting by Liwen-Edison Fu
