Almost exactly a year ago most of the western world started locking down to grapple with the coronavirus and covid-19 disease it caused.

Corporate venturers’ first thoughts often went to their portfolio companies and triage likely cash burn and survival (or how they could thrive) in the changed world.

It worked. The incidence of flame out and bankruptcy was relatively low compared to disaster scenarios and many corporations used the initial wave of the crisis to actively try and buy into assets and areas of opportunity.

This portfolio development bringing the assets and experiences of large corporations used to scenario planning is vital, which is why we see increasing number of VC firms hire people like Bernhard Gold, former partner at Deutsche Telekom’s corporate venturing unit, as head of corporate partnerships earlier this year.

But to talk to the portfolio whisperers, join us on April 7 at 9am PT for a unique ‘Meet the Experts’ networking event, spotlighting Bill McNulty, operating partner at Capital One Ventures and a Global Corporate Venturing Institute CVBD (Portfolio Development) expert.

The Institute will host these informational and networking events quarterly to introduce thought-leading experts, preview curriculum content and give the corporate venture community an opportunity to connect.

In this first session, McNulty will discuss the evolution of Capital One Ventures’ highly successful approach to maximizing the impact of Line of Business/LOB (BU) and CVC portfolio company engagement and adoption.

He will also talk about key success factors (and challenges) that CVC teams face in supporting parent business/startup collaboration, with real-world examples from Capital One Ventures’ portfolio. These collaborations have been transformational for Capital One and also contributed to numerous portfolio company exits including recent unicorn IPO Snowflake.

Agenda:

  • Content preview from upcoming CV Essentials for Enterprise course: The End-to-End Investment Lifecycle
  • Q & A with Bill McNulty: Capital One Ventures’ approach to accelerating parent and portfolio value
  • Feedback and Networking: Join breakout sessions to meet Institute experts and network with other CVCs
