James Loftus, formerly Square's global head of corporate development, has joined PayPal Ventures as managing partner.

Payment processor PayPal’s corporate venture capital unit, PayPal Ventures, has confirmed it has brought James Loftus onboard as managing partner, a role he started last month.

He joins PayPal Ventures after just over 18 months as global ecosystem head for growth, M&A and investments at mobile payment service provider Cash App, following a four-year stint as global head of corporate development at digital payment technology provider Square.

Previous roles for Loftus include senior vice-president of business development and operations at STX Entertainment and head of corporate development at Yahoo. He also spent two years partner.

PayPal Ventures invests in startups developing financial services, digital infrastructure, commerce enablement and blockchain technology.

Investments the unit has made this year include payment automation technology provider Modulr, business-to-business payment platform Xepelin, human resources software producer Oyster
