Aditya Swarup, a former principal at Rakuten Ventures, has been promoted to partner.
Aditya Swarup, formerly principal at Rakuten Ventures, Japan-based internet company Rakuten’s corporate venturing subsidiary, has been promoted to partner.
The move came soon after Rakuten Ventures co-led a $50m series A-plus round for China-based e-commerce platform Black Fish. The unit oversees a $200m global technology investment fund and a ¥10bn ($88m) Japan-focused investment fund.
At his current Singapore-based post, Swarup will oversee early to growth-stage investments globally, targeting IT startups.
Prior to his promotion, Swarup had been a principal at the same Singapore-based office and was in charge of early-stage investments outside Japan.
Swarup initiated his career at Rakuten Ventures in 2014 as a Japan-based associate, focusing on investments in the US, Asia-Pacific and Europe. However, his relationship with Rakuten goes back to 2013, when he was an associate at its Tokyo headquarters’ legal department.
Concurrently, Swarup holds board positions at Singapore-based online visual technology developer ViSenze and mobile commerce platform Carousell, both portfolio companies of Rakuten Ventures.
