Jeroen van Doornik has been a partner for Rabo Frontier Ventures, the strategic investment subsidiary of Netherlands-based financial services firm Rabobank, since January 2018, a year before the bank added an €80m ($90m) of capital to the unit, now with approximately $170m under management.
The fund, which was formed in January 2018, backs developers of financial, food and agricultural technologies, and seeks investment opportunities in the US, EU and Asia. Its four areas of focus are platform banking, financial cruise control, emerging technologies and applying data to the food industry.
The unit has more than 15 portfolio companies, having most recently taken part in a $58m series B round for fintech player Tide in October 2019. The deal was led by venture capital firm SBI Group and Augment. Jeroen van Doornik said at the time: “This investment in Tide will generate valuable insights regarding innovation and development in SME banking and further allows us to work together with Anthemis and alongside existing investors such as LocalGlobe.”
Prior to joining Rabobank Frontier Ventures, Van Doornik had been an investment director at VC firm StartGreen Capital for more than three years, managing its €250m venture fund providing equity, debt and project finance. He also held investing roles at growth stage tech investment firms in energy, mobility and software and has founded a motorsports startup for eight years after a four-and-a-half-year stint at professional services firm Accenture.
Van Doornik holds a master of science degree in public administration with a focus on financial management from University of Leiden, is a member of the Dutch private equity and VC association and hosts guest lectures at the Universities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
