WndrCo led the mobile VPN provider's latest round, increasing its overall funding to almost $360m.
Media holding company WndrCo led a $295m funding round for US-based mobile privacy software provider AnchorFree yesterday that included venture capital firms Accel, 8VC, SignalFire and Green Bay Ventures.
Founded in 2005, AnchorFree has created a mobile app called Hotspot Shield that operates as a virtual private network (VPN) for mobile devices, allowing users to browse more securely by protecting their identity and encrypting data.
In addition to Hotspot Shield, which AnchorFree said has been downloaded 650 million times, the company also provides an app called Privacy Wizard that lets individual apps be secured, and a time-sensitive message and photo posting tool known as Kaboom.
AnchorFree founder and CEO David Gorodyansky told the New York Times the company has now raised a total of $358m in funding, and that it has been profitable since 2010.
The proceeds from the round will support an expansion into security technology for connected devices, and AnchorFree will also consider strategic acquisitions.
The company’s last funding came in a $52m series C round in 2012 led by investment banking firm Goldman Sachs.
AnchorFree had also raised $6m in a 2006 series A round featuring Renn Capital Group and angel investors including Bert Roberts and Richard Rainwater, and its existing backers as of 2012 also included private investors Esther Dyson and Greg Coleman.
