University of Stuttgart has scored an exit with the acquisition of nFrames, a 3D mapping technology spinout also backed by Vector Informatik.
NFrames, a Germany-based 3D mapping software developer founded on University of Stuttgart research, has been acquired by location data provider Esri for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 2013, nFrames has created a suite of software tools under the brand Sure used to render 3D images from aerial and ground-level pictures of cities and rural areas.
Sure can be applied to 2D images captured using aerial cameras, drones and lidar sensors. Uses for the technology include urban planning and designing, engineering and constructing buildings.
Esri now plans to integrate nFrames’ technology to extend the image processing tools and spatial analytic functions of its own 3D imaging suite: 3D GIS.
The spinout’s headquarters will remain in their current location but will be repurposed as an R&D centre, tailored to 3D capture products including both Sure and 3D GIS.
The spinout is listed as a portfolio company of Vector Venture Capital, the corporate venturing arm of electronic systems networking software developer Vector Informatik, though further details could not be ascertained.
Jack Dangermond, founder and president of Esri, said: “nFrames is a leading provider of 3D image reconstruction software and services, and I am excited to welcome the company to the Esri family.
“As Esri continues down its path of innovation to create a multidimensional experience, this acquisition enhances our ability to create extremely high-quality 3D data from imagery, which is critical for our customers in the municipal, planning and architecture, engineering and construction industries.”
