Michael Buzzo has taken a portfolio strategy role at the Australian mining group.

Michael Buzzo

Michael Buzzo, previously head corporate venture capital unit BHP Ventures, has become head of portfolio strategy and development at its parent company, Australian mining and metals group BHP.

The firm hired Laurel Buckner as vice president of ventures in January this year to lead the BHP Ventures team. She continues to lead the group.

Buzzo joined BHP Ventures in late 2020 as a principal, before moving up to manager two years later.

Formed in 2018, BHP Ventures backs sustainable mining, battery and waste management technology developers. The unit has about 20 portfolio companies including thermal energy storage system provider Antora Energy and recycled battery material producer Ascend Elements.

BHP Ventures has some 10 team members across Australia, the US and Singapore. Most recently, the unit hired GCV Emerging Leader David Li, former senior principal at now-dormant CVC group Avanta Ventures, in July as San Francisco-based lead principal.
