Optical network technology RoadMap spun out from Cambridge in 2014 and had raised more than $2.3m before the series B round.
RoadMap Systems, a UK-based optical network technology spinout from University of Cambridge, has attracted an undisclosed amount of series B funding from the University of Cambridge Enterprise Fund V, operated by Parkwalk Advisors.
RoadMap spun out from Cambridge’s Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics in 2014 to develop wavelength selective switches that enable optical telecom and data networks to support so-called flex-grid networking, which uses software to allocate network bandwidth according to fluctuating demand.
Flex-grid networking is expected to help operators cope with the burgeoning bandwidth requirements anticipated when new data transfer standards of approximately 400 gigabytes per second become commonplace. The silicon switches are overlaid with liquid crystal, a material which RoadMap claims can enhance programmability.
RoadMap previously raised $1.7m in a 2016 round led by Cambridge Enterprise, the university’s tech transfer office, with participation from undisclosed investors. Cambridge Enterprise also led RoadMap’s seed round sized at more than $625,000 in 2014.
In addition to the TTO, RoadMap is backed by unnamed private and institutional investors from the UK, USA and China, including assorted members of the Cambridge Angels syndicate.
