Miguel Garcia-Diaz will move from Stony Brook University to the University of Delaware in May to become vice-president for research, scholarship and innovation.

Miguel Garcia-Diaz

Miguel Garcia-Diaz, currently the interim associate vice-president for research at Stony Brook University, will move to the University of Delaware on May 1 to become vice-president for research, scholarship and innovation.

He will take over from Kelvin Lee, who has held the position in an interim capacity since July 2022. He will return full-time to his role as the Gore professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering in the university’s National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals.

Garcia-Diaz has been at Stony Brook’s faculty in pharmacological sciences since 2007. He was associate dean at the Stony Brook University Graduate School from July 2021 to October 2022, having become interim associate vice-president for research in September 2022.

The University of Delaware’s research enterprise consists of more than $237m annually in externally-funded projects and Garcia-Diaz will be expected to bolster the reputation and value of the institution’s innovation portfolio — including patents, tech transfer and entrepreneurship.

Garcia-Diaz says: “I am thrilled to be joining the University of Delaware as vice-president for research, scholarship and innovation.

“This role presents an extraordinary opportunity to create meaningful impact while supporting the UD community’s culture of entrepreneurship and excellence in research and scholarship. I look forward to working together with president Assanis, his leadership team and UD’s faculty, staff and students to advance the University’s mission and sustain its impressive growth.”
