Johns Hopkins’ portfolio companies attracted more than $1.2bn in combined funding during the past fiscal year, setting a new record for the university.

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV), the technology transfer arm of Johns Hopkins University, has revealed a record 12-month period for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021. The office’s portfolio attracted $750m in venture funding, with another $500m in public equity. The $1.25bn total marks a new record for the university, which additionally celebrated acquisitions worth more than $2bn overall. In fact, the $1.25bn funding raised equals the capital secured in the previous three fiscal periods combined and is more than 10 times the amount that the university’s companies used to secure before JHTV was established in 2014. Christy Wyskiel, executive director and senior adviser to the president of Johns Hopkins University for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, said: “It is a reflection of many factors, including a robust funding environment, Johns Hopkins technology and research that is both leading edge and commercially valuable, and — last but not least — the cumulative impact of diligent work by many people in the Johns Hopkins ecosystem. “It sends a message that Johns Hopkins and Baltimore are great places to seek and fund impactful opportunities.” Wyksiel recently spoke with Global University Venturing to discuss how she built JHTV and helped it catch up to its peers, as well as the challenges that remain for the university and the larger Baltimore ecosystem on our Talking Tech Transfer podcast. JHTV highlighted a few particular successes from the past year, such as the $257m series B round and $2.15bn acquisition of cancer screening technology developer Thrive Earlier Detection only three months later. Another highlight was the $100m series A round for liquid biopsy test developer Delfi Diagnostics in January this year, which attracted corporates Illumina and Allianz. JHTV now has 174 active companies in its portfolio, having also generated more than $225m in licensing revenue and $153m in sponsored research to date.
