Smile Invest and Innovation Industries Fund have co-led a $37m first tranche for TUe spinout Effect Photonics’ series C round.

Effect Photonics, a Netherlands-based optical transceivers developer spun out of Eindhoven University of Technology, has raised $37m in an initial series C tranche co-led by Smile Invest and Innovation Industries Fund.
The round also included Photon Delta, Btov Partners, Brabant Development Agency and assorted private investors.
Effect Photonics is commercialising an optical system-on-chip technology using dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). The technology enables, for example, high bandwidth connections between data centres and in 5G mobile infrastructure.
James Regan, chief executive of Effect Photonics, said: “This funding and our partnership with our investors will allow us to take the next leap forward, bringing even higher capacity ‘coherent’ products to the network edges, as well as scaling existing production.”
Innovation Industries Fund previously led a series B round of undisclosed size in November 2018, after Btov Partners had led a series A round also of undisclosed size with participation from BOM and Optidob in 2016 following a first close the previous year.
