Engineering and 3D design product firm Ansys has bought Cambridge-founded Granta Design and will offer the company's materials information products to its customers.

Granta Design, a UK-based materials information software publisher spun out of University of Cambridge, has been acquired by engineering simulation and 3D design product firm Ansys for an undisclosed sum.
The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2019, when Ansys expects to update the market on the implications for its near-term financial outlook.
Spun out in 1993 from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, Granta Design sells software products that provide enterprises with detailed information on engineering materials including metals, plastics and composites.
Granta’s offering includes Granta Mi, which helps clients ascertain the composition of a given engineering material, and Ces Selector, which predicts how products will behave depending on their component materials.
The company also owns a materials-orientated training resource called CES EduPack, which is used by more than 1,000 universities globally. It has not disclosed details of any funding pre-acquisition.
Following the acquisition, Ansys will offer Granta’s services to its customers through an enhancement of its materials intelligence offering, which the corporate regards as of growing importance in light of innovations such as 3D printing and novel composite materials.
Shane Emswiler, vice-president and general manager of Ansys, said: “Granta Design has pioneered the field of materials information technology.
“With materials engineering becoming an increasingly important aspect of product development, our customers require high-quality and comprehensive materials information for accurate simulation results.”
