SoftBank paid $1.5bn for a 51% stake in the mobile gaming company in 2013 and now owns 73%, after buying additional shares from external investors.

Telecommunication and internet company SoftBank agreed on Friday to acquire a 22.7% share of Finland-based mobile game developer Supercell, increasing its stake in the company to 73.2%.

Founded in 2010, Supercell is best known for Clash of Clans, a multiplayer strategy game where players must attack others’ settlements while defending their own.

SoftBank bought a 51% stake in Supercell in 2013 for approximately $1.53bn, subsequently paying $344m in August 2014 for the 10% of the company held by its mobile gaming subsidiary, GungHo Online Entertainment. GungHo acquires its stake in Supercell at the same time as SoftBank.

SoftBank has now revealed how much it will pay for the additional shares, but said they would be bought from external shareholders.

Supercell had raised approximately $142m in venture funding across two rounds from Institutional Venture Partners, Index Ventures, Atomico, Accel Partners and London Venture Partners before SoftBank acquired its majority stake in 2013.
