Wildcard has raised $7m in a Softbank-backed series A round to help it provide a new way to browse the web on mobile phones.

US-based mobile web technology developer Wildcard has raised $7m in a series A round that included participation from Softbank Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of telecommunications company Softbank, according to Reuters.

Venture capital firms General Catalyst Partners, Lerer Ventures and Box Group also took part in the round. The funding came through a $4m second tranche, which was added to $3m raised by Wildcard in July 2013.

Wildcard aims to provide an alternative to the internet on mobile phones through a library of mobile ‘cards’ which it claims can give users faster mobile web access than any browser or native app.

The company also gives brands a single-solution card strategy for Twitter, Google, Pinterest and hundreds of other popular apps.
