SoftBank is a diversified internet, telecommunications and technology group, though much of its capital has been channelled into its investment activities. It is also majority owner of publicly-listed chipmaker Arm and the largest external investor in Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba. Former units include SoftBank Ventures Asia, sold to newly formed ecosystem builder TheEdge of in 2023, and SoftBank Capital, which was launched in the 90’s and which made the group’s investments in Alibaba and Yahoo.
