As head of the ventures unit, John Willis engaged with startup founders and corporate venture investors exploring new technologies in the energy sector.

John Willis, vice president of technology ventures at Occidental Petroleum (Oxy), has retired after 20 years with the US-based energy company.

Willis held a range of roles during his tenure, including leadership positions in drilling and completions. His most recent role leading Oxy Technology Ventures had him increasingly engaged with startup founders and corporate venture investors exploring new technologies in the energy sector.

Earlier in his career he also worked at gas company Exxon, before founding a software and consulting business before joining Oxy.

Tyler Sooby, vice president of commercial strategy at Oxy, has taken over the leadership of the CVC.

Occidental Petroleum operates globally across oil and gas exploration and production. It has also expanded into carbon management and related technologies, including carbon capture and storage.
