Costantino Mariella has left his position as senior investment director at Sony Innovation Fund, the Japanese tech company’s corporate venture fund, part of the Sony Ventures CVC subsidiary.
He joined in 2017 and over the next eight years made investments into startups across multiple sectors, including media and entertainment, retail technology and fintech.
As part of his role London-based Mariella sat as an observer of the board of What3Words, a company that makes a web and mobile-based geocoding system for location sharing. He also led the investment into Urban Jungle Insurance, an insurer that specialises in city apartment coverage.
Before joining Sony Innovation Fund, Mariella was CEO of YourCAD, a Brazilian startup making CAD/CAM software for the furniture industry.
From 2001 to 2012 he worked for Sony, where he reached the role of strategic technology partnerships manager.
Sony Ventures, which manages the Sony Innovation Fund, was established in 2016. It operates a number of funds, including Sony Innovation Fund 3, which closed at over $200m in 2022. It invests globally across sectors including fintech, entertainment, healthcare, IoT and deeptech. Its most recent investment, made earlier this week, was into 2D Photonics, an optical interconnect technology developer.
