Daniel Gundel will join Funke to support its buy-and-build investment strategy.

Daniel Gundel has joined publishing company Funke as investment director after six years at Mairdumont Ventures.

According to his LinkedIn, Gundel will focus on a buy-and-build strategy for Funke, Germany’s third-largest newspaper and magazine publisher. Funke’s investment division, Funke Digital Investments, targets growth-stage startups in German-speaking countries, with a view to acquire at least a majority stake if not a path to 100% acquisition.

Its portfolio includes social media publisher Media Partisans, recruiting app Truffls, HR market research company Trendence and job seeking platform provider Joblocal.

Gundel was senior investment director at Mairdumont Ventures, the corporate VC arm of travel publishing house Mairdumont, which he joined in 2018 after founding investment consulting firm Stingray Ventures.

He was also three years at SevenVentures, the corporate VC unit of German media company ProSiebenSat.1, where he became associate director.
