Mohamed Khalil, head of strategic investments and portfolio management at Mastercard, is one of the 100 leading corporate venturing professionals in our 2025 Powerlist.

Mohamed Khalil leads the investment execution and portfolio management team at Mastercard, a role that has evolved significantly since he joined in 2018. The lean team sits as part of the strategy and corporate development team. In his time at the helm, Khalil has done much to bring a structured approach to the investment function.
Since joining the Mastercard team, he has built a portfolio management practice focused on driving performance and engagement with the growing portfolio of nearly 100 investments. Growing this practice has been a strong focus for Khalil and his team over the past three years.
Khalil divides his attention between startups that will provide immediate commercial returns, such as augmenting existing Mastercard products and offering cross-selling opportunities, and longer-term, so-called Horizon two and three investments, which will take more time to mature.
Khalil has brought a structured approach to the investment function at Mastercard.
Throughout his time at Mastercard, Khalil has worked on several investments focused on partnerships with global companies including MTN Fintech and Airtel Mobile Money, digital financial services businesses built within two of Africa’s largest telcos, as well as with dgPays, which offers digital payment solutions to consumers and businesses in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and WeMoney, an Australian smart money management app.
Mastercard’s investments have been broadly across fintech and commerce, including payments, cybersecurity, data and analytics, and financial inclusion. Khalil is particularly interested in technologies that open access to financial services to more people.
Prior to joining Mastercard, Khalil was a member of human resources software company ADP and was part of the team building Morgan Stanley’s mass-affluent financial advisory model.
Khalil started his career as an engineer at Emerson Network Power. He has an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the Albert Dorman Honors College at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
