Jim Gable, resident of Chevron Technology Ventures, is one of the 100 leading corporate venturing professionals in our 2025 Powerlist.

Jim Gable is president of Chevron Technology Ventures and vice president of innovation. In this role, he leads Chevron’s primary organisation for accessing external technology and preparing it for enterprise scale-up, leveraging venture capital investments, technology pilots, university relationships and a portfolio of internal transformational technology projects to deliver affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy.
Gable has been with Chevron 25 years and has held numerous roles at the US oil and gas company during his long tenure. This is, in fact, his second time to lead Chevron Technology Ventures, having done so in his early years at the company.

The unit runs two types of funds: one that is focused on core technologies and one that is focused on sustainability. The team is now on its seventh core technology fund, which invests in startups developing technologies relevant for Chevron’s core energy operations. Chevron Technology Ventures has invested in more than 100 companies through these core funds.
The team has also raised several Future Energy funds, which focus on the energy transition, backing startups with solutions for mobility, energy storage and carbon capture. The most recent of these, the $500m Future Energy Fund III, launched in 2024, brought the amount the energy group has committed to investments in low-carbon technologies to $1bn. The company has made 30 investments through these funds.
Chevron Technology Ventures’ investment interests span a wide variety of startups, with recent investments including software for optimising drilling operations, a developer of sustainable plastics and a startup creating technology for lithium extraction.
Some 80% of Chevron Technology Ventures’ portfolio companies go on to pilot their service with a business unit of Chevron. Approximately 50% of those companies that run pilots go on to become Chevron suppliers at some level.
