Stanford-StartX Fund has returned to pump funding into electric skateboard manufacturer Boosted, helping to take the company’s total funding to $70m.
US-based electric skateboard manufacturer Boosted has raised $60m in a series B round that included Stanford-StartX Fund, the vehicle affiliated to Stanford University’s StartX accelerator.
The round was co-led by venture capital firms Khosla Ventures and iNovia Capital, and also featured Bay Meadows.
Founded in 2012, Boosted manufactures electric skateboards designed to help commuters undertake their journey to work. The boards are built to offer an ‘exhilarating’ experience while withstanding the rigours of daily usage, and range from $825 to $1699 in price.
Boosted will invest the proceeds in the development of new light electric vehicles in addition to enhancements of its underlying technology as it seeks to build upon its market stature internationally.
The company has now raised more than $70m of funding in total, including an undisclosed amount of series A funding raised from Stanford-StartX Fund and Bay Meadows at an unspecified date.
Boosted also received $380,000 from pooled investment fund interests in 2013, according to a regulatory filing. It is a graduate of the StartX and Y Combinator accelerators and had also raised approximately $467,000 of crowdfunding in 2012.
Patrick Pichette, a partner at iNovia Capital, will take on a preferred board position following the round, a promotion from his current independent board capacity.
Pichette said: “With most city trips today coming in at less than three-to-five km, the new technology in light electric vehicles offer an unparalleled advantage for speed, convenience, cost, environmental footprint and fun.
“There is a profound trend in the making with mobility right now – one that will touch billions of people – and we are excited to be part of it.”
