US-based Akebia, which develops treatments for blood cell deficiency disease anemia, has raised a further $4.1m in series B funding, bringing its total financing for the round to more than $26m.

The social video advertising platform, already profitable, has raised $25m which it will use to expand its activities internationally.

Venture capital firms Canaan Partners, TPG Biotech, Care Capital and Mesa Verde Venture Partners also invested in the B round having provided $30m for Elevation's A round in January 2010.

Agro-commercial business AgriNurture has raised $30m in funding from agribusiness conglomerate Cargill, which has taken a 28% stake.

Of deals by the top companies in the sector, 140 were at the preclinical development stage, with an average of $22.9m invested, followed by 39 investments at phase I, 34 at phase II and 13 at phase III, although the average amounts invested increased by stage.

The money will be used to fund commercialization of TruRisk, Aviir's proprietary cardiac risk assessment technology, and additional molecular testing services provided through Aviir Heart Laboratories.

The alternative energy company has raised $25m in a series C round featuring existing investor Total.

The smart grid technology company has raised $24m in debt financing as it prepares for its initial public offering.
