Michelle Gonzalez, corporate vice-president and global head at M12, is one of the 100 leading corporate venturing professionals in our 2026 Powerlist.

Under Michelle Gonzalez, M12 has evolved from a standalone corporate-backed venture fund into what increasingly resembles a strategic entry point to Microsoft in the artificial intelligence era. Her defining shift has been to “lean into the M”, aligning the fund closely with Microsoft’s ecosystem, research capabilities and go-to-market infrastructure to support portfolio companies.

This repositioning reflects a broader change in how founders view corporate venture capital.

In the context of rapid advances in AI, Gonzalez has argued that early corporate investors now offer more than capital, providing access to customers, enterprise distribution, early technologies and, in some cases, critical compute resources. As she noted at the GCVI Summit in Monterey in March, the scale of disruption has elevated AI from a technical trend to a board-level priority.

Since taking over in July 2021, Gonzalez has expanded M12’s portfolio to more than 100 active investments and overseen 20 exits. In 2023, she moved the unit closer to Microsoft’s core operations while preserving independence in investment decisions. About half of the team is dedicated to portfolio development, with structured support to guide startups through pilot programmes and into Microsoft’s global sales channels.

Over the past year, activity has reflected a sharper strategic focus rather than simply increased volume, although approximately 50 deals have been completed since the start of 2025. Investments have concentrated on enterprise AI, infrastructure, developer tools, cybersecurity and “datacentre of the future” themes. Recent transactions include Auctor’s $20m round, nEye.ai’s $80m series C and NeuBird’s $19.3m financing for agentic AI in enterprise operations.

Exit performance has also been notable. Recent outcomes include the acquisition of GroundTruth by ZeroToOne.AI in March 2026, SGNL’s agreed sale to CrowdStrike in January and Markforged’s acquisition by Nano Dimension in April 2025.

M12’s significance lies in its attempt to deliver on a model many corporates aspire for: a venture unit that remains financially credible, strategically aligned and operationally embedded without becoming an extension of corporate development. Its portfolio sits adjacent to Microsoft’s core priorities, including AI workloads, enterprise software, security and cloud infrastructure, while continuing to syndicate alongside leading financial and strategic investors.

Gonzalez’s approach is grounded in a cross-sector background spanning product, strategy and venture investing, including leadership at Google’s Area 120 and roles at IBM Ventures and Comcast Ventures, following an early career at McKinsey and Apple.

Under her leadership, M12 has become a benchmark for AI-era corporate venturing: strategically integrated, founder-relevant and capable of delivering both innovation and liquidity.
