James Ho, managing partner at Animoca Ventures, is one of the 100 leading corporate venturing professionals in our 2026 Powerlist.

James Ho has quietly become one of the most influential corporate venture investors in Web3. Less visible than Animoca Brands’ chairman Yat Siu, he has nonetheless become a central force in determining where the company deploys its capital.

As head of Animoca Ventures, Ho operates at the intersection of corporate strategy and venture investing, backing companies not only for financial return but to reinforce Animoca’s long‑standing thesis around digital ownership and open metaverse infrastructure. Since becoming managing partner in March 2024, he has overseen a portfolio numbering in the hundreds, while also using accelerators such as Founders Factory to support and mentor early‑stage founders. Alongside Coinbase and Fabric Ventures, Animoca and Founders Factory launched a multi‑million‑pound accelerator in the UK last year.

Animoca Brands itself develops and publishes a broad portfolio of products, including the REVV and SAND tokens, original games such as The Sandbox, Crazy Kings and Crazy Defence Heroes, and titles built on major intellectual properties including Disney and Formula E. Its investment strategy blends ecosystem building with financial returns, focusing on web3, gaming and digital property rights. The firm has backed many of the sector’s defining companies, including Colossal, Axie Infinity, OpenSea, Dapper Labs, Yield Guild Games, Harmony, Alien Worlds and Star Atlas.

Last year, Animoca remained one of the most active investors in Web3, completing dozens of deals and a handful of exits. This year’s exits include Bitte and Quack AI. Recent investments, however, signal a shift towards physical AI — applying decentralisation to compute, data ownership and intelligent hardware — as well as increased activity in layer‑2 ecosystems, middleware for game developers and platforms bridging traditional finance into tokenised assets.

Three deals this decade illustrate the pivot. Animoca Ventures has backed Mocaverse, the company’s interoperable identity and ecosystem project; XAI Games, a gaming‑focused layer‑3 built on Arbitrum; and Pixelmon, a revived Web3 gaming IP undergoing governance restructuring. Each reflects Ho’s preference for platforms capable of anchoring broader ecosystems rather than isolated applications.

Ho spent nearly a decade in advertising before joining Animoca, founding multiple agencies including Poca Design, Digital Vantage Media and i3Motion. He has channelled this background into building Animoca Ventures into a hybrid model: part strategic investor, part ecosystem architect. Under his leadership, the unit has matured, with stronger portfolio support, tighter alignment with Animoca’s core platforms and a clearer focus on long‑term value creation over short‑term token cycles.

In a market still recovering from volatility, that evolution may prove decisive — not only for Animoca, but for how CVC adapts to decentralised industries.
