Franz Zöchbauer, managing director, Verbund X Ventures, is one of the 100 leading corporate venturing professionals in our 2026 Powerlist.

Franz Zöchbauer established Verbund X Ventures, the corporate VC arm of Austria-based electricity provider Verbund, in 2022, with investment activity accelerating from 2024 and a target of completing 15 deals by this year.
Progress to date suggests the strategy is on track. By April 2026, the unit had completed 11 investments, focusing on areas such as energy storage, grid flexibility and AI-driven energy management. Recent transactions include Zerothird, a hardware-focused industrial startup, Sweden-based AI company Qurrent and Spanish battery storage specialist HESStec, reflecting a consistent emphasis on technologies central to the energy transition.
Alongside direct investments, Verbund X Ventures has also committed capital to venture funds, including Vireo Ventures, to gain exposure to earlier-stage opportunities in electrification, digitalisation and decarbonisation. These themes map directly onto the structural challenges facing the energy system, particularly in Europe, where electricity still represents a relatively small share of overall energy consumption despite the growing role of renewables.
As Austria’s largest electricity provider, Verbund brings strategic value both as a limited partner and as an industrial collaborator. Its historic strength in renewable generation, particularly hydroelectric power, provides a foundation that Zöchbauer has sought to extend into adjacent innovation areas, including grid management, storage optimisation and digital energy systems.
A distinguishing feature of the unit is its dual structure, combining an investment team with dedicated resources to support portfolio companies. This operational capability is designed to accelerate commercialisation and integration, linking venture activity more closely with the parent company’s strategic objectives.
At earlier stages, Verbund complements its investment activity through the Verbund X Accelerator. The programme runs innovation camps in which selected startups work on defined industrial use cases alongside Verbund and other corporate partners, creating a pipeline from experimentation to potential investment and deployment.
Taken together, these elements position Verbund X Ventures as an emerging model for how utilities can translate corporate venturing into tangible competitive advantage. Under Zöchbauer’s leadership, the unit is not only building a focused portfolio but also embedding innovation into the organisation’s broader transition strategy.
