To say governments are increasingly important to the innovation capital ecosystem is an understatement. There are now more than 150 new funds either directly run or backed by governments – a near threefold increase over 2014’s total, according to Global Government Venturing.

There was also a threefold increase in direct dealmaking by these government venturing funds – 533 in 2015 compared with 173 the year before, according to GGV’s proprietary database.
