What began as an ecosystem play around Zerodha’s brokerage business has evolved into one of India’s most distinctive balance-sheet investment platforms. At its core lies a strategic hedge: diversify away from the volatility of trading revenues while backing founders with unusually patient capital.

In Indian finance, few companies have reshaped consumer behaviour as decisively as brokerage firm Zerodha. Their model was brutally simple: flat-fee pricing in a market long dominated by percentage-based commissions. But a decade and a half later, the more interesting strategic story is no longer the brokerage itself. It is what Zerodha has chosen to do with the cash it throws off.

That story is Rainmatter.

Launched in 2016 as an investment and incubation arm, Rainmatter now sits at the intersection of venture capital, corporate strategy and ecosystem building. Over the past decade, it has invested over ₹1,500cr ($159.5m) across more than 160 startups, spanning fintech, climate, health and a smaller media and deep tech portfolio.

Its central logic is straightforward – use the economics of a highly profitable, asset-light brokerage business to build a diversified portfolio of long-duration bets.

As Somnath Mukherjee (pictured, below), vice-president of fintech investments at Rainmatter, explains, “The entire Rainmatter play is really more of a large diversification play now.”

It’s a sentiment that goes to the heart of the firm’s evolution.

Hedging against the cyclicality of markets

Rainmatter was initially meant to be a partner ecosystem – their investments were aimed at partnering with founders who would in turn make use of Zerodha's own products.

By 2015, Zerodha had moved beyond its original price-led proposition. The launch of Kite, its in-house trading platform, along with APIs that allowed third-party developers to build on its infrastructure, created what Mukherjee describes as an “Android-like layer” around investing.
